June 27, 2016 -- General Assembly
Ruth and I spent last week at the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America, in Mobile Alabama. It was a good week. The weather was moderate (for Alabama in the summer!), the food was tasty, and the meetings were edifying.

General Assembly is a prime opportunity to meet people who work overseas. I met with a Philippine pastor who wants us to start RUF in the Philippines, and followed up with some overseas colleagues. I also met with several missionary friends. I discussed the next steps in starting RUF in New Jersey with a pastor there. I also checked in with many other people I can't normally see.

The most significant action of the assembly was the discussion and passage of a resolution to "recognize, confess, condemn and repent of corporate and historical sins, including those committed during the Civil Rights era, and continuing racial sins of ourselves and our fathers..." You can read the whole resolution here. This is a follow-up to an energetic discussion last year about race and repentance for sins past and present. Since then presbyteries and churches have been discussing this issue. Some might wonder why this didn't happen years ago. The PCA did make a resolution about race a while back. This one is beefier, and demonstrates an ongoing effort to act with integrity toward all people. We are very encouraged. Pray for the PCA!

For the next couple of weeks I will be preparing for assessment and staff training, both in July, and begin planning my fall travels. Tomorrow I head back to Mexico for a couple of days. I need to work out some details for continuing the work next year. Pray for wisdom in understanding things in another culture.
